W. Ralph Murray, born in Pennsylvania, he is a graduate of the Museum School of Art, now known as the University of Arts, in Philadelphia. He received a BA in art education and also took graduate studies at Syracuse University. After teaching art for 31 years in public schools, he retired to devote more time to his special interest in watercolor painting. He does, however, continue to teach at the Kirkland Art Center in Clinton where he has had classes for the past 30+ years. He also teaches watercolor class in Hamilton and Cooperstown. He taught classes at Munson Williams_proctor School of Art for eleven years.
Throughout the year he holds workshops in watercolor painting and has a week long workshop in August on Monhegan Island, Maine.
Mr Murray is a charter member of the Central New York Watercolor Society. As an active member, he has been treasurer, vice president and president of that organization. He is also a signature member of the Philadelphia Water Color Club and an exhibiting member of The Pioneer Gallery in Cooperstown.
He exhibits widely and has been represented in the Cooperstown National and REgional Exhibitions, the Adirondack National Exhibition of Watercolors in Old Forge, the Watercolor Today at the Creative Workshop in New Haven, CT., The Kent Art Association in CT., the Batavia National Exhibition, the Baltimore Watercolor Society Shows, the Southern Vermont Art Center National Exhibitions, and the New York State Fair where he was awarded a State Purchase Prize in 1976 and 1978.
Mr. Murray was featured on the Watercolor Page in the October 1991 issue of the American Artist magazine. He was also one of the featured artists on the WCNY-TV Art Auction in 1993.
One-man shows have been held at the Art Centers in Clinton, Rome and Old Forge: SUNY of Oneonta; the Gallery of Jamaica, VT; three one-man shows have been held at the Southern Vermont Art Center in Manchester; the Laighton Gallery in Schenectady; the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn; the Canajoharie Art Gallery; Elizabethtown College in PA; SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome; the Pioneer Gallery in Cooperstown; the Cooperstown Art Association and the Associated Artists of Syracuse.
His work is represented in the Lupine Gallery on Monhegan Island, ME, and the Pioneer Gallery in Cooperstown. Mr. Murray also maintains a gallery in his home at 301 Tower Street,
